The MOSE (Medical Officer, Synthetic and Experimental) program is a test being carried out by Starfleet to deploy synthetic life forms into the ranks of the uniformed service. After the tremendous success of the Emergency Medical Hologram, Starfleet has long wanted to deploy more advanced synthetic platforms to augment and support the medical service. Specifically, the intent is to unify holographic and positronic technology. With the boundaries of multi-species medicine outstripping what any one person might be able to master, the MOSE program was intended to provide an active and exhaustive automated database applied to a hybridized augmented hologram.

The Generation II EMH consists of a base unit in the shape of a cylinder 74cm from top to bottom with a width of 23cm. It houses a power cell, several holographic emitters, and the base positronic brain for the unit. The information stored and processed by the MOSE unit is fully integrated with its assigned vessel and is stored redundantly. The MOSE unit can replicate the functions of a tricorder and additional medical scanners. It also contains a small replicator to create simple compounds.

In combination with the ship systems on the Constitution III-class, the MOSE unit can coordinate three instances of its holographic form. The MOSE unit can operate without any exterior infrastructure for years at a time. It’s power source is rated for an estimated 240 years.

The MOSE unit is not a program or series of subroutines processing from a fixed code but rather a complete, positronic brain incorporated with additional assets specifically provided for medical service.
