Historical Note

The Utopia Planitia plain is a vast lava flow on the planet Mars that was the landing site for the 20th Century Earth probe Viking 2. It would later become the site of several early Martian colonies and ultimately become the location of surface strutures attached to the starship construction facility orbiting high above.

Nearly all starships constructed by Starfleet can trace their lineage back to work done at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. The Fleet Yards are a key Starfleet starship construction and design facility in the 24th century and are positioned in synchronous orbit 16,625 kilometers above the Utopia Planitia lava flows on Mars.

The facility includes a number of drydocks and space stations, as well as several large drafting rooms for starship design and the aforementioned planetary facilities.

The Galaxy Class Starship Development Project, including the majority of ship construction, design work and system model tests, was based out of Drafting Room 5 on Mars Station at Utopia Planitia.

Following the battle of Wolf 359 design work and flight tests of the new Defiant Class were performed at Utopia Planitia. After work on the project slowed, and design flaws became apparent, the project was scrapped.

Ships Developed primarily at Utopia Planitia

  • USS Galaxy (NCC-70637)
  • USS Yamato (NCC-71807)
  • USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)
  • USS Odyssey (NCC-71832)
  • USS Equinox (NCC-72381)
  • USS Defiant (NX-74205)
  • USS Voyager (NCC-74656)
  • USS Defiant (NCC-75633) (aka USS Sau Paulo)
