Personal Profile

Counselor Baruka is a jovial, well mannered man, whose easygoing nature is more the result of too many painful experiences rather than carefree youthfulness. He is a sympathetic and supportive listener, with an eye for detail and a genuine interest in helping people find their own path in life. To mistake his affable temperament for meekness would be a mistake, however, as he expresses moral opinions readily, if need be, and shows an (for a psychologist) unexpected intolerance for lies of either personal or professional variety.

As an officer Baruka is somewhat unorthodox, showing little reverence for rank or procedure. He is never insubordinate, but can be insensitive to the finer points of a chain of command, undercutting superiors without really intending to. He has a high opinion of all of Starfleet, which is one of the main reasons he was assigned to Starfleet Academy.

Physical Appearance

Like all El-Aurians, Baruka is physically indistinguishable from humans. He is a thickset man apparently in his late 30s to early 40s, with a round, pleasant face and a curly set of hair. He sports sideburns, a circle beard around a full mouth and crow's feet (atypically for a man his age) at the corners of his deep brown eyes. He could easily be mistaken for a human of Mediterranean descent.

Typically, Counselor Baruka can be seen in his office without the uniform jacket, sporting his blue undershirt and a vest. He has an outspoken dislike for the current uniform style.

Personal History

Before the assimilation of the El-Aurian homeworld Baruka was a devil-may-care ruffian, dashing about the galaxy with youthful fervor and joi de vivre. Losing his family to the Borg, and subsequently his first wife in the accident that claimed S.S. Robert Fox, made a more sombre man out of Baruka. He decided to give something back to the galaxy and joined Starfleet. He served some time as a junior conn officer, before coming to the conclusion that a life of orders and duty wasn't for him, at least not yet.

Baruka embarked on a spiritual journey, traveling from planet to planet exploring different philosophies and religious experiences. Vulcan meditation, Klingon monastic life and Bajoran orb experiences were all equally valid to him. In his travels he met people of various backgrounds and interests, which sparked a passion for the common denominators in all humanoid psyches. To this end he began studying psychology.

After gaining qualifications as a practitioner of therapeutic counseling, Baruka returned to Starfleet. Retrained as a counselor, he served on several Starbases and a few ships before being assigned to Starfleet Academy to help future officers find their path in the service.

Family History

The only child of elderly El-Aurian artists, Baruka was reined without much discipline, an attitude which has informed his personality to great extent. So too has art, as Baruka plays several instruments (he is quite taken with blues) and sculpts proficiently.

He has been married thrice, widowed twice and divorced once. He has no children he's aware of, but takes part in the lives of many of his friends families. He resides in New Orleans, from which he commutes to San Fransisco daily.

Education Background

Baruka gained his undergraduate qualifications at a university in pre-occupation Bajor, master's papers at an Institute for Sciences in Trill and a doctorate at the University of Betazed. He completed a clinical internship in Vulcan. He worked for a while as a researcher of artificial intelligence at the Daystrom Institute, before returning to Starfleet at the onset of Dominion War.

He is accredited in educational, forensic and clinical psychology, with psycho-pharmacological qualifications and extensive xenopsychological experience. He has specialized in career counseling.

Medical Profile

Healthy, if slightly overweight. He enjoys both Southern American cooking with butter and salt, and real alcoholic brandy, both of which might ultimately be detrimental to his health. However, he has always passed his Starfleet physicals.
