Early Life

The al-Rahmans have always been settlers and pioneers. Efraim's parents are both high school teachers on Mars, and his elder sister's family are Federation colonists. Efraim was a bright if overactive kid, and displayed signs of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Succesful treament reduced his symptoms, and by high school he had mellowed quite a bit, though still remaining an energetic young man.

The biggest influence on Efraim's life has been his grandfather, retired Starfleet Captain al-Rahman. The Captain's tales of exploration, adventure, and even war piqued Efraim's interest, and inspired him to apply to the Academy after school. It took him two tries, as he failed the written portion due to misunderstanding the question, and he worked the interim year as an EVA technician on the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. Eventually he was accepted into the Academy.

The Academy

In the Academy Efraim was quickly selected for the Engineering track, where he gained several positive notations for creative thinking. He excelled at lateral thinking, often finding unconventional solutions to even severe challenges. He was also a popular and socially active Cadet, president of the Chess Club and regular member of the Academy's drama productions. He did, however, receive poor marks for Federation History and Basic Combat, with Efraim himself citing lack of interest as the main cause.

Marriage

Efraim met his future husband, Lieutenant Leonard Fitzsimmons of Starfleet Judge Advocate General's office, when Lt Fitzsimmons was the Academy instructor for Ethics & Interplanetary Law. They started dating during Efraim's second year at the Academy, got engaged during his final examinations, and were married in a summer wedding week after his graduation. After a short honeymoon Leonard received his orders to deploy as the JAG officer to Deep Space 7, and Efraim left for Kemaris station to receive his orders.

Personality

Efraim is a bright, curious young man, with a genuine interest in his surrounding and the way things work. Unlike the stereotype of engineers, he is socially active and extrovert. He is, however, somewhat restless and oftentimes seems barely able to confide himself in the space he presently occupies. He also has the tendency to worry too much.

His hobbies include swimming, sailing and hiking, interests shared by his husband, as well as calligraphy and 20th century progressive music. He reads Engineering Journals and dreams of landing a commission to the Starfleet Core of Engineers Advanced Starship Design Bureau.
